Today, I was coding for my startup, Caprycon, on my laptop running Kubuntu 26.04 LTS. I looked down at the bottom right of my screen to check the time and noticed it was stuck at 6:10 PM. Updating my date and time settings did nothing. When I tried to switch applications by clicking the icons on my KDE Plasma taskbar, they were unresponsive. That's when I realized the entire taskbar had frozen.

Here is how to fix it.

How to Fix an Unresponsive KDE Plasma Taskbar

Press ALT + SPACE. This opens KRunner, which will appear as a drop-down search bar at the top of your screen.

Enter the following command:

plasmashell --replace

The plasmashell --replace command restarts your entire KDE Plasma desktop environment without closing your open application windows. It shuts down the active desktop process and immediately launches a fresh instance.

What the Command Does:

  • Reloads the Taskbar: Rebuilds the panel, clock, system tray, and application icons.
  • Refreshes the Wallpaper: Reloads the background and any desktop widgets (plasmoids).
  • Fixes Visual Glitches: Clears temporary graphical bugs, frozen menus, or stuck interface animations.
  • Preserves Open Apps: Your web browsers, documents, and terminals remain safely open.

That's it, folks. Let me know if this fixed the issue for you. If you have any questions, leave a comment below.
