Custom shelf in Maya

Autodesk Maya includes default shelves filled with tools for specific workflows, like animation and modeling. But if you want quick access to tools that aren't already grouped together, you can easily create a custom shelf using a simple keyboard shortcut or MEL scripting.

Building a custom shelf keeps your favorite tools in one place. It saves time by cutting out constant menu diving, and it lets you build a personalized toolset without disrupting Maya's default interface setup.

How to Create a Custom Shelf in Maya

  1. Click the gear icon located to the left of the shelves panel.
  2. Select Shelf Editor to open the management window.
  3. Create a new shelf, type your preferred name, and hit Enter.

Adding Tools to Your Custom Shelf

Adding tools to your new shelf only takes a few clicks:

  1. Navigate to the top menu and find the tool you want to add.
  2. Hold Ctrl + Shift (or Cmd + Shift on Mac) and click the tool. Your cursor will change to show a small plus icon, confirming the tool can be added.
  3. The tool will immediately appear on your active custom shelf.

(Note regarding the screenshot: The plus-icon cursor doesn't appear in the image because the native macOS screen capture module hides it by default.)
